Fly fishing pontoon boats are becoming very popular among fly fisherman and other anglers. More and more people are beginning to use inflatable pontoon boats for fly fishing. There are many advantages why you should consider this type of watercraft for fly fishing.

They are very maneuverable which makes it easy to get in and out of choice fly fishing spots. Other advantages for using a pontoon boat for fly fishing is that they are very good portable boats and lightweight. Some require absolutely no tools to put them together. They literally can go from your trunk to the water in just about no time at all.

Even though these inflatable fly fishing pontoon boats are lightweight they are also very durable. The pontoons or bladders that the boats are built on are typically made from PVC or vinyl. These materials come in different thickness typically from 600 – 1500 denier. The higher the number the thicker the material is.

Pontoon fishing boats are very affordable and come in a varity of configurations and designs. Designs can vary from something as big as a two man pontoon boat to something much smaller and packable like a one man boat.

The fly fishing pontoon boats that are on the market today have many features. Some of these watercraft come with a stripping apron or basket to help manage your fly line while seated. They also have storage pockets and bags for tackle, rod holder, oar rests, drink holders and cooler.

Some one man pontoon fishing boats are stable enough that they even have casting decks which allows the angler to stand up and some may have motor mounts so that you could add an electric motor for trolling.

There are also some very high quality pontoon boats that are specifically built to resist saltwater which makes them great for fly fishing saltwater flats and still be able to use them for fresh water. These are the reasons why this type of watercraft is becoming a very popular boat for fly fisherman and other anglers.

I know that on the last fly fishing trip I took there were quite a few anglers using these inflatable pontoon boats on the river, more so than the traditional drift boats that you would typically see. In my opinion it is probably because they are very affordable and make very good portable boats for fly fishing.

Boats may have rubber floors, either plain or inflatable, or they may include steel, wood or aluminum sheets for rigidity. The tubes are made of rubberized, synthetic sheets of Hypalon or PVC to provide light-weight and secure buoyancy. The tubes are often constructed in separate sections, each with a valve to add or remove air, to reduce the effect of a puncture. Should one section puncture it is quite possible to repair it while still underway.

More extensive inflatable boat repairs – due to pinholes, punctures, peeling, leaks or worn fabric – can be done easily and inexpensively in dry dock using new innovative two-stage synthetic rubber coatings (SRC). Some inflatable boats have an inflated keel to create a "groove" along the line of the hull improving the hull’s wave cutting and turning performance. Due to the weight, it is very easy to cause an inflatable boat to start hydroplaning, thus making it faster than the engine would allow when the hull is operating in displacement mode. The rigid-hulled inflatable boat is a development of the inflatable boat.

Due to the speed, the portability and the weight, inflatable boats are used extensively in tending operations in port and at sea, recreational water skiing, commercial fishing, and mostly as Rescue crafts. These can be restored or even repaired if they are subjected to a great deal of wear and tear from the elements such as water and sun. As these products aggressively adhere to the damaged Hypalon or PVC shell can fix virtually any surface damage through a unique chemical bonding between the undercoat and topcoat that permanently vulcanizes the two rubber coatings together to make the inflatable as good as new. But as these kind of boats are very cheap they are mostly replaced by a new one.

Some manufacturers will actually use an attractive warranty as a substitute for quality or even proper boat design.

It is important to keep in mind that the company the boat is purchased from must be around long enough to deliver on their warranty. An inflatable boat is a fantastic resource to have available, particularly for the owners of big ships and vessels.
